Piston Coatings
Anyone here had experience with piston coatings? I'm mainly interested in thermal barrier type stuff for the crown but I'd also like to hear about skirt coatings. I guess it wouldn't be an easy thing to quantify but any hard data would be appreciated, as would recommendations re suppliers.

Re: Crankshaft main bearings - operating temperature?
I think you can be pretty certain that the temps downstairs will be under 100c given typical operating temperatures and their flow paths. Fatigue failure of the steel cages isn't all that rare. I first came across it many years ago (not on an engine); if you catch it in time it isn't terminal but if...

Re: Flow management through reeds
Recently lowered the CCR on a race bike that made 3-4 more in the mid range and with a different pipe should make 3-4hp more at peak. Also a common misconception is intake charge goes from carby, through the reeds, into the cases, up through the transfers into the cylinder in one cycle. People that ...

Flow management through reeds
Hey Johno, I've been reading ya blog - love ya work, you sound a bit like of a Burt Munro of 2T's  . You must have an awesome garage or a indulging boss 8) . Your work with the reed blocks is interesting. I have work with mine to a minor degree - checking, opening up slightly etc - but never ...

Tech Section
How about a general tech section where people can discuss tech issues that are relevant to any brand of bike? It'd prevent interesting topics from becoming buried in a section for one particular brand.

Re: Hello from Central West NSW
JonW, what I'd like to know is why those fat boys on their FatBoys can ride around with open pipes, seemingly with impunity. Anyone else making that much noise would cop a ticket quick smart...

Re: Hello from Central West NSW
John, if you have a spare set of pipes I'm happy to help you make up some internal stingers to test. A mate of mine has my welders on loan at the moment, but when I get them back I'm happy to help. I just got some steel tube from bunnings - they had a size that just happened to be perfect ID. I rea...

Re: Hello from Central West NSW
Thanks for your reply Lozza; it'll be interesting to see how EngMod2T assesses the current port layout (which is basically all Blair) and also what is left to be gained. I may start a thread showing its assessment of the current and proposed layouts. Internal stingers cost hp an effective silencer i...

Re: Hello from Central West NSW
This is the important bit: Something to keep in mind with these alternative stinger designs is that they flow a little less than the traditional style and therefore have to be made slightly bigger in diameter to compensate. I underestimated this effect, and the 32mm OD outlet I used severely limited...

Re: Hello from Central West NSW
Thanks for all the kind words! I don't trust my arse-dyno at all (it's tricked me too many times already), but I can get reasonably accurate "Moroso HP" numbers from a G-Tech and terminal speed runs. I've been working with EngMod2T lately, and hoping it'll help show the way to a few more h...

http://i323.photobucket.com/albums/nn458/mx250syd/icons/Approval/icon_salut.gif to both, very nice. But Metralla may not have the bling but I would bet it would be a hoot on the right road - like up, or down, the Oxley. A Matralla 360 won a 'big deal' (24hr ?) public road race around Barcelona many...

Hello from Central West NSW
Hi all. My name is John, I've been playing with 2 strokes on and off for 30 odd years now. Here are my bikes; the blue Sherpa T I've had for a couple of years now. The red Metralla GT 370 I've owned for over 35 years now. I love trials riding more than anything but the road bike is probably the one ...
