Just reliving my youth

Post by casho73 »

Hello everyone , A great site you have here . Well , A little while back I bought a rd250lc which was the same type and year that supplied myself with my L's and P's .
Loved that old girl , Rode it from the central west of N S W to Mackay Q L D twice. May I just add don't think the old bum would be able to do it now .
Well I better get around to the point then , Well I got the yammy for a good price ( well at the time seemed good ) , But have realized I have a big job ahead of me .
First the engine had been running lean on one bank ( cracked inlet rubber may have been a cause ?) which resulted in a nice little hole in the piston , no switch gear on the left hand side , no compliance plate (will this make it difficult to register ?) the frame number ends in 000010 , so she is a early one I believe . engine number doesn't match . all side panels are there , but cracked around the mount points , tank is all good except for the shallow dint in the top ( maybe some air may pop it out ?) clocks need attention (held together with cable ties ) , front brake master is a rd aircooled item , no keys so will need to sort that out also , My ideas for the bike are to keep it looking standard as possible with an upgrade of the motor and some pipes . Would like to go with the Athena 392cc kit (do these fit to the RDLC cases ?) will not be stroking it at this stage , but would like something that has good midrange , rather than out and out performance . Also a upgrade brake package , like the look of the triumph calipers . Well I have some ideas in my head , but it will take time as I would like to do it rite the first time and enjoy the end result . Will upload some pics when I get a chance , but please bare in mind it will take some time for the build . ok I will list some bikes I have had , Greg

Greg,

Happy days, looks like another obsessed Yamaha twin tragic :)

There are many parts specialists for new bits and the fellas here have been known to horde a few used parts so you shouldn't find it too difficult to rebuild her.

It is essential that you document (feed us) the build with many pictures or you run the risk of being shunned by all the anonymous members here :)

Welcome.

Greg,
to go with Athena, you'll have to get an RZ or Banshee bottom end. Those cylinders won't fit on LC cases. Good news is, the RZ/Banshee bottom end will bolt straight into the frame. And seeing as you're already not matching numbers, changing engines doesn't matter. Switch gear should not be a problem to get hold of.
Your biggest problem by far is going to be a lack of compliance plate. I'm not sure if you will ever get it registered without it. I would be contacting the RTA or a local blueslip shop about that before you spend any more money.

Well thanks guys , should start to upload some pics this weekend . Will have to keep my eye out for a well priced rz bottom end then . As I said it will be a slow build , So not in a great hurry for the motor yet , but will be paying attention to the body work and frame for now .
Oh and a trip to the rta about the frame before I get to far in . Maybe another frame is on the cards ? Well thanks again guys and love the site , Some good info in here for all types of 2stoke fans .

Forgive my ignorance of Australian compliance plates. Is it the case that if you import a bike you need to get an Australian compliance plate? If so, then replacing a lost one must be possible, and the manufacturers frame number can identify the model. If it equates to an Aus market model can you get a plate? If so, surely plates can get replaced for circumstances like this?
Ex UK, now in Adelaide. LC250/350. DT175. Shed full of sh1t in the vague form of dismantled rusty RD’s and RZ’s.

These days when you import a bike you get some import approval papers instead, a compliance plate is no longer fitted.
In this case you would need to hope you can find someone loose to give you a blue slip then keep it registered all the time and hope its not a hot frame.

Should be able to check with RTA if it has a history by the frame number, then go from there.

Personal imports get a Dept of transport tag not a compliance plate. I've got about 8 bikes with them and they can easily come off. You should be able to find evidence of the compliance plate being attached if it hasn't been stuffed up too much. usually around the headstock somewhere. If you have a friendly Yamaha dealer you can take them the frame number and they will tell you when it was first sold (if it is an Australian bike). I did that becuase we were having some dating issues on an XT250 - ended up doing it for all my old Yamaha's - the guys behind the counter also found it fun to do (then they also gave me copies of the correct parts manuals).

We don't get any tags in NSW.
My Mustang has no Aus compliance what so ever.

It is a 66 moddel, but I dont think that makes any difference.
