TZR resto

Post by hrc14h »

Hi all, my new bike turned up today.
It's pretty rough all the normal things will need to be sorted.
First thing is the carb manifolds are falling apart so that will be the fist thing to source.
Next is a new set of pistons I believe it's on its 3rd reborn, not sure yet I'll measure tomorrow.

I had the apprentice helping with the strip down.
I'm not quite sure how far I will go with the resto.
I'll get it running then work out what I'll do with the bodywork.

I came across a TZR info pak the other day, has service, owners, parts, sales and Race Kit catalogue, if your interested?

The race kit cat goes into detail about porting and a whole bunch of other stuff..

PM me your email if you want it.,

My tank was only lightly rusted across the bottom. Even though it was only light i found 2 table spoons of rust particles in the fuel when i drained the tank. I recently sealed the tank on my yl3 which had been chromed. I bought an australian made kbs tank sealing kit. After using the cleaner and the rust blast i was not happy with how clean the tank was before sealing. I called the company and spoke with there tech. He suggested i make a sand slurry (3 cups sand 2 cups coca cola) put it in the tank with a 30 cm lenght of dog chain then rock and shake the tank to remove the rust. I did this 3 times, rocking the tank for half hour each time before i was happy. Then i went through the kits cleaning proccess again. It has been left to dry out completely for 4 days and today i plan on sealing both yl3 and tzr tanks. I'll let you know how i go. Hrc14h, let me know if i can help you with any info during your restoration, I feel we are conected in some way started our restorations the same day. I would be interested in the info greasmeup has on the tzr, especially the race kit. If you get it from him i'd love to get some photo copys or maybe they can be posted on the forum.

Hi Gman. I have a geared down electric motor with a long shaft like a rotisserie.
I usually tape the tank to that and let it turn over in the garage for a few hours with some ball bearings in the tank. If I did that with this tank I think it would fall apart.

I'm interested to hear how your tank goes.

Don't worry I'll give you a yell if I can share anything interesting.

Today I looked at the rubber manifolds

Image

They were very sad. I found some new ones at close to $300.
They were out of my price range then I started looking for Tdr parts and found a second hand pair for about $30.

That's more like what I can afford.

I also ordered a swag of top end stuff but more on that later.

Proper restoration is quite expensive, even if you do most of the work yourself. I've taken to doing "preservations" these days, particularly if all the bodywork is original (as yours appears to be). Its difficult to judge from the photos, but if all the major parts are in reasonable condition I would just dismantle, clean up, fix what needs fixing, then reassemble. As you've already found with the inlet rubbers, many parts to fit early model TZRs are obtainable around the world. Let us know how it goes!

James

I agree with you James.
Preservation beats a dodgy looking restoration.
My Elsie still has the same paint she left the factory with.

Unfortunately when I removed the body work I did not find one piece that was not broken.
I will take a second look at it later and see what is worth salvaging but at this stage I want to focus in getting the mechanicals sorted.

Hmm...that is unfortunate. Have a look on Yahoo Japan - there is usually no shortage of 1KT TZR bodywork listed at reasonable prices. Most of it is in fair to good used condition - perhaps a few scuffs and/or small cracks, but most sellers point out the defects. If none of your own plastic bodywork panels are usable, some Japanese wreckers will sell you a complete matching kit (or as many pieces as you want) in good used condition.

The transfers look interesting. It has MRE engraved on the barrel.

I de-coked the power valves and packed in some much needed lithium grease today.
One of the valves was showing a bit of wear.

Lozza won't like those knife edges between the transfers. Old technology ;)

Got some goodies delivered today.
I've got the engine in one lump now so I should be able to drop it into the frame tomorrow and see how the electrics are.

The wife was in hospital today getting a plate put into her broken wrist.
I guess she had been too extreme.
Well I got the little one to sleep and started working on the bike.

Motor is in and she runs, happy days.
