LC fuel cap... Anyone with an alloy one?

Post by JonW »

Ive been looking for an original alloy fuel cap for my LC but ive come up wanting, and Ive started to wonder if we even had them in Aus...

I asked on Norbos forum and it seems the 80 models had them but in 81 moved to plastic tops, and we never got 80 LCs...

But I had an 82 with one... hence why my 421 has one on it.... :?

Or did we get them on some of our bikes as part of the JDM overspill dumping ground we had become at that time?

Anyway, do let me know what you have on yours as Id like to know if Aussie bikes did get them or not.

(and of course if anyone has a spare they wont use..... )

For those who dont know... the LC cap is on the left in this pic (this is a plastic one), right is RZ and superceeded LC part number.

Pretty sure the rusty heap 250 in my mates yard has an alloy one.

Already offered to buy it off him......
May have a pic of the headstock, will have a look next time if not.
Reckon its one of those parts bucket things. "Hey, Tanaka, pass me another crate of tank caps" type of thing.

Mine was originally an alloy one, but I've since gone to plastic.

It would have gone in the bin over 10 years ago.

Hi Jon
Just had a look at mine for you, it's the same as the one on the left in your pics and plastic, I'm pretty sure this is the original one as one key still fits all 3 parts on the bike, it has the arrow on it that points to the front of the bike
My LC has 12/81 on the compliance plate but seems to be classed as an 82 model
Cheers

Jon,

I'm pretty sure my old RD250LC (Chassis No.5E1-001567) had an aluminium fuel cap, because I remember drilling a hole in it 8O (c.1990) to try and fix what I thought was a blocked breather.

This bike was registered as 1980, but a quick look at my Yamaha Frame Number List 1992 suggests that chassis numbers 5E1-000101 to 100000 were 1981 models. I suppose it could have been made in 1980 for the 1981 model year. Of course, I can't guarantee that the fuel cap was original to that bike - it may have been replaced by a previous owner.

Regards,
James

Thanks guys!

Jeff, sorry to hear that.... :/

Steve, if yours has an arrow... its alloy! like this:

James, Im starting to wonder if we just seemed to have them randomly now, I cant seem to make sense of the years with the Aussie bikes and their caps, or like you say people replaced them over time, but its a strange thing to have older caps as spares, and not the more modern version etc. :/

Yeah that's the same as mine Jon with the arrow on it, I think that has to face the front of the bike, something to do with the breather in it, I seem to remember reading somewhere, I thought it was the original one, thanks for the info you learn something every day as they say
