Help with yw100...

My fellow lovers of all things two stroke, I need your help and advice...
Yammie yw100 yes it's a scooter and it's a glorious stroker!
Battery fully charged, horn works, indicators work, but no parking or headlights.

Electric start and kick. Nothing at all when pressing starter button, no clicking just silence.
No spark from plug when using kick starter.

Has compression but I'm unaware of history, haven't stripped down the engine at this point...
I understand the basic plot, in that we need fuel, air and spark. I'm thinking the regulator/rectifier may be cactus?

I've removed the plug and also the air filter element which is completely stuffed. Need to check which plug is correct for this model too.

My friend took it to a local bike shop who promptly relieved him of almost $400 only to inform him that they could not get it to start, let alone run...amazing that the receipt lists many things, nothing to do with checking the air filter though? Farking thieves...

Any ideas as to why it won't start?

I'm not trying to get it going to sell or any shit like that, just trying to help out a mate...thanks in advance, cheers AJ.

Start with the manual and a test light/multimeter.

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/597202 ... tml#manual

There is apparently a fuse near the battery somewhere, although you would imagine the shop would have checked it. Check its operation with a test light though.

It sounds like a connector or something has come adrift. pull them all apart and clean and check them all with a test light. If the battery is charged, the power is obviously breaking down at some point in the circuit so keep stuffing your test light into every point you can access.

Someone gave me a Yamaha Jog a few months ago which came back to life pretty easily and has run reliably ever since. There's plenty of info out there. Good luck.

One thing it will not be is regulator rectifier.
Check the lead from the alternator side of the crank which generates the spark. When my engine on my LB80 was done they didn't set it up properly so wasn't providing a pulse to the coil. I'd suggest sort out the kick start first then battery start. But if everything is dead I'd try fuse then earth wire. Make sure its clean and on tight at both ends. Check your connectors with th etest light - the good thing about kick starters is you can stick the test light in and kick it to see if the circuit is working. Just work through the circuit and you'll find it.
Do you have a workshop manual - there are lots of tests to run to check and will costy you less than $400 from the thieves.

Scooter is running...yay! Via the Kickstarter only. Runs well actually but nothing from the electric starter ie dead!
Looked at online manual, thanks for the link...checked fuse near battery with multimeter and it's fine.
Why is it that some of the connectors when checked are giving me the nice 'beep' via the multimeter but some are not?
Checked both sides of the coil and they're fine also.
When it's running, the headlights work just but no tail light and / or indicators??
These things are set to try us...any advice greatly appreciated guys, cheers AJ.

Update #27... Ok well it seems like that many!
Scooter running nicely, but still nothing from starter.
Lights horn etc all working. Have sorted out issues when checking continuity with multimeter also.
Believe non electric starter related to fault with starter relay...just about to check that now.
Nice having some two stroke fumes filling the air again.

Good news...starter issue sorted. After hours of continuity testing, checking all wiring and connectors, resistance of relays etc. thinking why the f@ck won't the starter button work??? Everything else works, all lights and indicators etc.
Turns out there is a safety switch linked to the brakes. I knew the scoot wouldn't start on the side stand but the brake switch was news to me.
My mate is happy and scoot runs nice now with correct plug and a nice clean air filter element. The old adage about fuel air and spark rings true, not to mention the odd safety switch!
A couple of hours tinkering and under $10 in parts and voila! You have to wonder how some of these bike shop employees sleep at night, charging him nearly $400 and they couldn't get it to start, let alone run.
Everyday really is a school day guys, catch y'all next time...cheers AJ

Glad to see you got it sorted Ajs, and I'd agree with GMU, persistance is the key to most of these things.
