Kids Mini Quad

I bought this thing impulsively as I was driving home from breakfast a couple of weekends ago.
The bloke only wanted $40 for it, so in the back of the car it went.

Image

It had been sitting in the weather for a long time. Plenty of corrosion around, and no spark plug in the engine meant it was toast.

Image

Completely stripped it down, cleaned up and rust converted the frame before painting it black. I didn't like the original grey/silver frame colour.

One of the things I read about these is that the pipes are pretty bad. A common mod is to cut 4" from the header pipe and add it to the belly. Some of them also have catalytic converters in them. I decided to check things out for myself, so I cut it open.

Definitely no cat in this one, but a very strange end can. It's not really a muffler. It's just got some weird cap in the end with holes punched in it. I guess this is their pressure bleed.

Image

I'm going to cut that out and make a proper silencer. I will cut the can off and remove that weird cap.
I've worked out I need about a 13mm stinger (based on the 22mm header pipe). Not sure where I will get 13mm pipe from yet. I will run the stinger into the belly to quieten it down, and I will put some perforated tube and exhaust packing in the can.

After buying some replacement bits, here's how it looks now:

Where are you going to get the Banshee motor from?

You're not the first one to suggest that, but I prefer my kids alive

Cut the pipe open last night and removed the weird "silencer".
Also going to shorten the header and extend the belly which is a common mod on these things.

Modded the petcock that's built into the carb to bypass it. I will use an inline one instead as the built in ones are apparently unreliable.

Also made a new exhaust flange. The stock exhaust just had a small round hole in it. I'd say at least a quarter of the exhaust port was blocked off by it. It was also very thin.
So I will make up a new header piece to fit this new flange and join to the rest of the pipe.

Great project Jeff!

What are you going to do about a new motor? Lifan 4T?

No I've already bought the new motor. That's it in the last pic.
So it's still a 49cc 2Stroker - otherwise I couldn't post it here

Shes a runner. Need a new rear sprocket and exhaust gasket as the one I made is not up to snuff.

Yeah it was all pretty fast. The parts are easy to get and CHEAP.

Unfortunately, both kids are scared of it
