Rz rear shock upgrade.

Post by Dave.T »

Hi Guys,

I've read so many different opinions on the rear shock upgrade, that I really don't know what to believe, so....

I really don't want to spend $1000 bucks on a shock. Have to buy 2, so ouch!!!

My bikes are not going to see the track.

Anyone purchased the cheaper shocks such as the YSS items ? What did you think ?

R6/CBR conversion ?

My weight is around 80kg.

Any real life experiences appreciated.

Have a YSS for my LC and same on my XT (I didnt really mention the XT... Pat will get upset again LOL)... Nitron is better, but YSS is cheap from the uk from a big player like yambits as its vat free. great shock and great value.

FYI as its an RZ you want it for you really will struggle to go past the N/F2 (86 on) OEM shock from someone like Fowlers, mine was great value vat free etc. it doesnt have the (silly) belt adjuster, but its the right shock for an F1 etc.

I wrote up the R6 conversion on my site, and while many liked it, I wasnt convinced.

R6 shock worked well for me. Cost about $150, minor easy adaption to fit.

Might be.. worth getting an opinion/quote.. on a rebuild..

The LC 'De Carbon' gas-damper is of quality enough to be worth doing..
.. at least, that's what I've found..

Didn't even think about the later model shocker option...didn't think they would be still available.

Thanks again Jon for good advise.

What bike is it Dave?
You say for RZ but then later you refer to ("...later model shocker option...") referring to the DeCarbon LC type.
I'm confused!

It's an 85 model. The shock Jon is referring to is the 86 onwards, I assume.

Also want to replace the shock in my 83 as well.

Apart from not having the "Silly" belt adjuster, I would imagine it would work perfectly.

By all means, correct me if I am wrong.

The standard suspension on my 83, when newish many moons ago could keep a 85 GSXR750 honest in the day. And that was through bumpy twisty Tasmanian roads.

I'm a fair bit older now, and that was fast enough back then. So no need to try and go faster now

Anyway got the RGV if I want to go really silly through the corners :P

Haha, I was almost as quick 'round the Island on my RZ as I was on my 750 Slabbie! -Def not a yardstick for good handling as standard that gixxer.
(Not saying I was quick though!!)

Youre quite right Dave, thats exactly what i was saying; 86-on shock for the F1.

It will fit the 83 as well of course, same shock.

The LC shock is a different beast really and not for the RZ... I only mentioned the LC as I was taking about my YSS purchase. I now others on here have Wilbers, Fox and Ohlins as well as YSS and Nitron and I expect Hagon is out there too, maybe even a WP. All are good, but for the money on an RZ the N/F2 version is great value.

Ok, so I just checked and Fowlers list it as NLA now, but Im sure it will be back in if you keep checking. Else check other suppliers: https://au.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/view/1UA2221001

Fowlers post to Aus was 45quid, I cant seen CMSnl being much different, tho in Euro.

Thanks for confirming Jon...
Yeah spotted those on cms...very good price.

Was going to wait until I had worked out what Norbo could and couldn't supply then do a split order. Might have to just order and cop the freight in case these are the last ones available.

No worries, and dont forget we dont really know what will happen with the imports and customs etc so who knows if that will effect what they cost going forwards.

Dunno why fowlers has those shocks at £136+vat now when they were 81ish only a few weeks back. worth an email perhaps?

Norbo does not offer vat free pricing as he is not vat registered, just an FYI. Only the bigger businesses can do that. Brooksbarn, wemoto, yambits, fowlers etc etc

Interestingly the CMSNL link now has these at 395 Euros and Fowlers is out of stock. Ebay now lists them for more of course...

I've put in a 2015 R1 in mine, it works well for me at 75kg and now have rebound damping also. I shortened the screw eye end and extended the internal thread and also shortened the screw eye itself to get it to go same length as stock but have it at 4mm longer currently. Rebushed each end and was able to use the stock seals, but reversed.
