85 RZ rebuild

Post by Dave.T »

Some of you might have seen one of my first posts 'pregnant fuel tank'

Anyway, another forum member has asked me if I would post a rebuild post so here goes.

The bike is a original 85 Rz350 with matching frame and engine nos. Photo is how I purchased it.

Will update when I get time to organise and sort photos. I am by no means an expert in rebuilding bikes, but hopefully have a few tricks and ideas that will benefit and inspire one or two people.

The Starting Point.....

Dave, do you mind if I pinch your "green and gold" colour scheme, as you're not going to use it? :-)

I see where you're going with the Bobber front wheel and chunky tyre though.

Thanks to BRG, picked up a really good ductail, the missing fairings, and a few other goodies, that have really helped me.

Anyway, will restore cosmetically back to factory. Have a compressor and gun. Should have painted in the next few weeks.

Mechanically though, we will see...it has been a track bike at some stage. Came with (lightweight) custom chambers.

Hopefully I will discover some art inside the motor.

If anyone is trying to repair their plastics, look up these guys...http://www.trimfixsupplies.com

He sells a great little kit for about $60-80.
It is designed for ABS repairs and includes a bottle of ABS liquid, ABS powder, Monomer, re-enforcing tape etc....

I have used this product with amazing results.
Rebuilt a 83 bikini fairing that I thought was beyond saving, but now as good (actually stronger) than new.

I repaired the hole by placing re-enforcing tape on inside and glued in place with the liquid abs. Once set, masking tape on the inside to shape of fairing. Get a small glass bottle (something like food colouring bottle) and put in powder. Add liquid monomer and shake. Add liquid until you get a nice consistency then pour into hole.

Depending on thickness, do not disturb for at least 8 hours. It may take 24hrs or more to set properly. Be patient. Build up and create shape with liquid abs.
For smaller indentations, sprinkle on powder and add monomer with supplied eye droppers.

For cracks, " V " out one side and stop the crack by drilling a small hole at the end of the crack.
Apply powder along length of crack and add monomer. Let it set and then repeat on other side.

Several applications will need to be done. Overdo it like body filler and sand/file back.

Body filler will not adhere to ABS. This stuff does

Ive used a number of different repair products, some better than others, and found a soldering iron works well if youre careful and the best of the others was by wurth which mixes as you use it. Ive not tried the stuff Dave used but it sounds similar to something I tried a few years back.

Hi Matty,

Fu@&ed if I know to be honest.

Sorry, got unlazy and looked up site. You need Plasti Set PKR1 for smaller jobs....mind you did my whole bike

I rocked up in person and showed him my fairing and had a chat. Sorry, but I am really bad with names, but the dude was the owner...really helpful guy.

The kit is really good value. He imports the ingredients in bulk and puts them together on site. You're not paying bullshit prices for a "brand"

By the way, what tab are you trying to repair, and what bike??

I've dropped them an enquiry email, thanks Dave, this sort of info and first hand experience is always handy
