Coming from the UK, and seeing how things were priced/advertised there (not always sensibly, but with a sometimes strange consensus), the routine in Australia seems to be "fishing". Get a sense that prices are going up for something and advertise whatever you have for the absolute most in the hope of a bite. If you can't get it either leave it up a long time, or start shaving a bit off.
Just my impression from looking at ads here in Aus over the last few years.
