2T Banned in Oz from 2018?!?!

Post by OzzyElsie »

Has anyone heard anything similar?

I was talking to someone today who was saying just that. Exactly which 2t's he wasn't too exact - street 2t's most definitely.

All or just new rego's he wasn't certain.

Historic club bikes? Competition? He wasn't certain.

Apparently PCRC has been in discussions with Govt but any results are unclear.

Has anyone here heard anything?

Apparently the EU has already started bans - exact details I'm uncertain of.

That would certainly be a big call. If they cancel regos they would have to include watercraft, which would pose a massive impact.

Can't see it happening.
Manufacturers have already stopped making the filthy ones.
The new ones are cleaner than 4 strokes, so I don't see why they would bother. Surely a waste of public service time.

if they were to ever do such a thing, it would simply be an emmisions limit such as Australia adopting Euro 4 regulations in 2014 when europe roles it out.

doubt that'll happen.

I honestly think that the sum of the emmissions from 1980's Coronas and Sigmas in Australia would far out weight ALL of the two strokes.
the following 4T propaganda was brought to you by your local 2T lobby group...

"whats that youve got there?... a 450? "
yeah...
"what cereal packet did that come out of? "
huh?...
"I just wanted to know, because theres nothing worse than finding a piece of shit in the bottom of your corn flakes. "

When have polliticians ever been rational though? They make the dumbest most sweeping decisions if left to their own devices. Keep your feelers out folks, you just never know what new restrictions or prohibitions will be attempted, even if it is something other than banning two strokes.

Be prepared to join a lobby group or public protest to try to protect your personal choices if it ever comes to it. There have been a couple of examples in the UK where motorcyclists and the motorcycle press have fended off ridiculous proposals (look up "Martin Bangermann" and "leg protectors").

Agree that it would be more logical to test individual vehicles for emissions (at an annual inspection), and I'm sure that would wipe out any number of old bombs, or classics.
I'm in SA and there is no annual vehicle testing here, so there are some real worn out old bangers here.

I come from the UK and there the annual M.O.T. test is quite stringent, they do stick a probe up the exhaust to test emissions, have done for years. Two strokes have a different allowance.
Ex UK, now in Adelaide. LC250/350. DT175. Shed full of sh1t in the vague form of dismantled rusty RD’s and RZ’s.

Yes but remember motorcyclists are in the minority here and dont really matter when it comes to anything. In Europe bikes are everywhere.
I cant see a total ban ever being introduced, on new sales possibly but still unlikely but not existing bikes. How many new strokers can you still buy anyway, and what about all the lawn mowers/ whipper snippers Bunnings would be out of business over night.

i cant really see it happening either.. australia is pretty liberal when it comes to stuff like this yeah maybe a very strict emissions rule on new bikes but prob just let the old ones die a dignified death.. fact is bikes make up around 2% of roads users 2 strokes would make up 2% of bikes on the road..i cant see it being really on their radar..man trucks and trains would put out more emissions then the rest of the vehicles put together.. but im sure they wont ban diesel!

2 stroke is about 95% of garden machinery and 80% of watercraft, so those are higher in proportion, but still small beer as Justin says compared to trucks etc.

just read a post involving water craft, outboard motors and saying that after 2012 no more 2 strokes will be sold...:( seems hard to ban stuff like chain saws when the replacement would be so much more expensive to make the emissions to do the extra would out weigh the 2 stroke ones which has the simple benefit of working regardless of position..ie upside down

Where did you read that twinrock?

I'm sure it was evinrude that went back to 2strokes because they were MUCH cleaner with direct injection and oil injection straight to the parts that mattered. Pretty sure they already had them meeting 2015 emissions rules and that was 5 years ago.

Thanks for the replies guys, although there is not a definite yes or a definite no.

We'll have to keep our 'ear to the ground' and report back anything suspicious.
