First 2T - RD400

Post by ayden_d »

Hey Guys,

I'm new here been looking for a new bike on and off for the past few months but finally picked up something good! This is my first 2 stroke although I've ridden them in the dirt a few times so I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to all these 2 stroke! I was originally going to motard a dt200r but I think it would have added up quickly so I thought I would get something set up for the street already.

Some other people may have seen the bike on ebay I probably paid too much for it but it's not like these come up too often so as long as nothing serious goes wrong I'll be happy!

The bike is a 1976 Rd400c frame with an Rd400e motor and rd400d body work so things are a bit confusing but the motor has been rebuilt and new seals throughout which is what I really cared about. Frame and other parts have been powder coated and the wheels cleaned up with new tyres and various other new and rebuilt bits and pieces from Yamabits.

Only real downfall is the paint as that wasn't done professionally but that lets me decide myself as I think the black paint isn't that well suited. Also there's a little bit of rust under the seat so that will need to get sorted

Mods wont be too serious as I want to be able to put everything back to standard although I do want a street tracker style seat so I want to find one that doesn't need to cut the frame and still use the hinges, similar to this style

Thanks mate, I'm in Silverwater nsw.

Bit disappointing I went to get it registered today but turns out if it was registered on historic plates and you want to change it to full rego, you need a blue slip which seems quite hard to find a mechanic to get one as no car places want to do them!

Congrats on your purchase, dunno what it went for, but now you have it you can look forward to enjoying it. Have fun.
If its a bitsa already there's no pressure to keep it perfect and original, blank canvas :-)
Lots of essential bits on Yambits.com, loads of other suppliers, people on here can advise as you work out what you need.
As its an aircooled you should have a look for the UK aircooled RD club and forum, theres a big following there, lits of knowledge. Stay on here though! This site needs contributors :-)
Ex UK, now in Adelaide. LC250/350. DT175. Shed full of sh1t in the vague form of dismantled rusty RD’s and RZ’s.

Ayden, I know a guy around Milperra that should be able to do it for you.

I've had that issue before and it's bloody annoying... they're too scared to do bikes.

I've been thinking about this lots since I got it and I think you're right no point trying to make it original when it's not to begin with! Although I would still prefer to not cut the frame and I'll definitely be keeping the oil injection.

All good thanks a lot, I found a guy that was in Auburn took an hour and a half for some reason but still passed me even if it was leaking a bit of 2 stroke oil! So its all rego'd now! I think people are a bit shocked to see a young guy on an old 2 stroke though
