2 Strokes Down Under

old engine bang..

new engine bang..

The other piston looks fine.
Definitely an air leak on that left hand pot!
Could be a bad crank seal if everything else looks good.

What is the usual course of action to remedy this type of failure?

Locate and rectify air leak.
Replace piston.
Hone bore.
Assemble.
Ride.

Am I oversimplifying the issues and other potential problems?

ive been contacting every forum and every guru i can for 'course of action'

the current plan is

new pistons
hone barrels
engine out to replace crank oil seals and clean out any melted piston bits
restore squish gap back to stock
colder plugs br9 change to br10
jet the bike properly- starting much bigger and plug chopping my way down before any further extended operation at WOT + redline

It wasn't a seizure, so a hone isn't *necessary*, but definitely a good idea, especially if you are changing rings.

Check for leaks and check again. Definitely go up in jet size. The other piston was close to going too. I thought I could see the other piston in the other pic, but it was just the bore

w3a51l, you're pretty close to the mark, aside from looking at jetting as well, once the bike is back together.
