Club Registration.

Who has their bike/s on Club registration in NSW?

It seems attractive to me and I was thinking of it for the LC. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

How strict are they? Do they allow mods like Dunstan Nortons, l.e.d. indicators, chambers :impatient: etc or is it OEM only?

What is the best club; friendliest :drink: , welcoming  , appropriate 8) , active :fap: , supportive :help: ?

Ciao, thanks in advance.

This might be helpfull, copied from the VJMC where I am a member. Club rego can be restrictive but if you have a few bikes its a cheap option.

Summary of NSW RTA & VJMC Conditional Registration Rules - Note that different states have quite different rules relating to conditional historic registration.1. RTA requirements - the operator of a conditionally registered (historic) motorcycle must be a member of an RTA recognised club (ie current membership).2. Conditionally registered (historic) motorcycles can be used for advertised events - ie advertised in RTA recognised club newsletter /ride calendar.3. For maintenance purposes , conditionally registered (historic) motorcycles can be ridden within 10km radius from your home address.4. Or the ride must be registered by the club into the club's day book.

Sounds good to me Pat, do you know if the VJMC accept modified bikes like my LC and XT?

There is a bit of a discussion about that on the VJMC forum at the moment John. Mild mods are ok but the debate surrounds things like those Deus piles of rubbish. I think it depends on the examiner a lot and their descretion and if the mods are period or not. Some say yes some say no.

I've heard some clubs are quite liberal on this - just ring up the secretary and ask.

I should be okay, it is mainly the LC's indicators. I think they are ugly lumps that distract from the bike (but I haven't come up with The Solution yet :-| ).

So it is $40 or so annual club fees, what's the rego per bike?

First time rego is $90 odd for plate etc then $56 per year after that.
The problem with the club being liberal with the rules is when the cops pull you over for something it becomes a big issue. Getting done for speeding etc can cause you a big headache on a club plate too, doesnt stop us mind

Sadly(?) my XT has KTM forks and motard wheels... and my LC has a 421 motor with RGV suspension and wheels... While both retain the essence and looks of the original, they clearly are not restorations of the originals. So, Im not thinking they will let me in. LOL

I would dearly love to show my bikes and ride them on occasion, especially locally, but I cant justify CTP, Rego, Full insurance etc on so many bikes.

I would be keen to join a club who would love my bikes like I do, for what they are and what they look like with clever well executed mods.

I would give it a go John as most of them are old dinosaurs that don't know what's what if it aint a CB750. No point spending all that cash and time to have mickey mouse handling and a big motor and never rego the thing.

haha, too true Pat. I bloomin love my bikes, but they bankrupt me to build and the rego costs of the ones that are done slows down the spend on the next project. 10km gets me to your place I reckon... too funny.

Every time I go for a 10k maintenance ride a highway patrol car drives past as I'm waiting to get out on the road.

Was speaking to my father in law on this very subject last night. He's an ex Sgt, and did some highway patrol. He said the likelihood of them checking into whether your ride is in the clubs log book is pretty low anyway.

But for most clubs, if it's a few of you going, it's no issue to call the secretary and have them put it in the log for you.

Your father in law will also tell you that if a cop that stops you from doing anything illegal then he is doing you a favour. !!!

I other words it is in the unlikelihood of an accident that's when you want your arse covered (and being legal).

If I was using the "for maintenance" clause I would be very careful. I would make sure I was meeting the 'letter of the Law' and the 'Spirit of the Law', and had a provable case just in case something goes wrong. In the first incidence I would make sure I could satisfy the cop on the side of the road and, more importantly, I would make sure I had some evidence that would stand up in court. That means I would have a written or verbal appointment at the bike shop or for my mate to do the welding etc. - preferablly written or witnessed.

And I wouldn't take 'club practice' or the advice of the club's bush lawyer either. It is probably best to read the clubs rules, the RTA regs and the relevant sections of the Motor Traffic Act (or whatever act it comes under).

They don't stop you doing anything illegal. They ping you for it.
