2 Strokes Down Under

Per my other thread I and as a result of some encouragement I plan to restore my 1984 Australia delivered RZ that I received as a spares bike when I recently bought a 1986 RZ and a 1999 RGV.

The bike basically looked like someone had scavenged a number of bits and left the rest. Key part missing was the engine. I had some stuff lying aorund from my RD250LC which sort of had me thinking that scraping the bike would be a waste. Also a lot of the hard to find stuff was either still on the bike or in a box that came with it.

So I have started by trying to source an engine. A nice relatively clean engine was found through findapart in Cairns for $510 delieverd to Brisbane. It is missing the generator cover so that is on the search list.

So last night I sat down and had a closer look at what is on the bike and what is missing. Here is a pic of what we have.
What is missing - CDI, power valve unit , rear guard, are the main things, passenger grab rail and a battery box also seem to be missing as well. Will need a set of indicators and fairings. I had an RZ front guard in a box which was great.
I think a Kenny Roberts Rep is the plan!

Ive defo seen worse, and Ive even started with less.... I started my 83 project with a phone call as a lead on a complied frame, its come on from there and I have about the same as you now.

Cant wait to see it evolve!

So here's the first annoying question - is the airbox on a RZ350 the same as on an RZ250?

I spent Saturday evening working through the wiring loom and tagging the bits and pieces. Bonus - the powervalve electronic unit was still there but confirmed that the CDI and powervalve servo are gone as are the carbs. Worse still an examination of the underside of the tank found bubbles that on closer examination turned out to be holes. Typical Yamaha!! So have also sourced a second hand tank allegedly in good condition........

Thanks for the tip. What is intersting reading this is going the otherway (which I know no one will do) but when trying to fit 350 stuff to the 250 makes interesting thought process.

So after spending too many hours on the net and crawling through my wreckers list I now have accumulated;

Powervalve servo plus pulley
CDI
Coil
Correct carbies
Indicators
Grab rail
Rear guard
Missing engine cover
Air box and hoses
One seat hook with one to go
Proper 1984 parts fiche

So will be taking a breather and taking stock while I wait for it all to arrive. Plan to leave the fairings and decals until later when I work out the colour. Also need mirrors but they seems plentiful aftermarket so no hurry.

The tank turned out to be a rusty basket case so I plan to see how far tank repairing has come. Seems some people will repair things others won't touch. Of course $$$$$$ are he biggest issue and there is always the replicas out of India if I get desperate - cut the bottom off one and weld to my original, maybe.

When it all arrives I plan to mock up the assembly and see how it goes.
