After watching 2 strokes in the classifieds for some time now I finally put a bid on one and ended up buying a Japanese Import RZ250R with only 15,000ks. Its Vin starts with 29L so its an 83 model. It runs pretty well but blows heaps of smoke especially when accelerating up hills. Its my first ride on a 250 2 stroke and a bit different from my other bikes and scooters re keeping the revs up and staying in the powerband but heaps of fun when the beastie kicks in. I was also pleasantly surprised about how well the RZ handled, even with the old Dunlop tyres. I'm planning on trying some Avon roadriders soon and getting down to working out what I've actually bought and what I need to do to it. Thanks for having me on board.

Yes to both questions GMU, I bought it on fleabay from Steve at oldgold and I believe the fairings are original, in fact the whole bike looks original to my untrained eye. I don't have the the belly pan however and one tab on the lower fairing is broken. The purchase was a bit accidental as I was the only bidder and the last thing I really need is another bike as I already have 4 in the garage but that's the nature of the obsession I guess.
There's an equation for the number of bikes you can have in the shed which is X-i
X being the number when the wife walks out. :rotfl:

Nice RZ mate, I checked out the photos of that on Old Gold's Facebook page and it looks like a genuine low km bike, not many of those around these days so nice buy.

Old Gold bring in lots of bikes that I like and it's dangerous to keep tabs on them, as you'll find your collection growing when you had no intention of it doing so.

I've seen a few Jap market RZ250's without the belly pan and wondered if they sold them over there without them? (or just a coincidence?)

Enjoy the bike.

Good to see you posting here Pete.

I reckon the bike is original without the belly, its a Japanese thing they seemed to like, but one should fit as I can see the mounting in the pics.

The tank has been swapped out for a better one I reckon, that or the side panels as they dont line up as perfect as Id expect but otherwise its a good looker and better value than re-building one... ahem!

Hi Pete,
Nice buy, was just looking at some pictures and pretty sure it is all original.
It shouldnt be blowing heaps of smoke up the hills, just a light blue haze.
It might be worth checking your oil pump setting.
Heres a pic.
Cheers

Thanks heaps everyone for your comments

I agree. I downloaded an RZ350 manual and sat down over the weekend to try and synch the carbies and adjust the oil pump. Took the tank off but couldnt figure out how to get in between the carbies to check the window? or even find the window. Pulled the cover to the oil pump off and had a look but without figuring out how to sync the carbies decided not to play around with it. I did notice that the carbies in my machine didn't match the ones in the manual and the marks on the oil pump didn't quite line up when the throttle was fully open. Anyone have any tips about how to do this? Im going to take it down to a 2 stroke mechanic in Brookvale who tunes my Gilera Runner FXR 2 stroke scooter this week to get a second opinion before I get the spanners out.
Also did a plug chop and this is what the plugs looked like after 200ks.

You can sync the carbies very easily using the "lolly stick (aka paddlepop stick) method".

Get a couple of paddlepop sticks, open the throttle and slide the sticks inside the filter side of the carby until they are just under the slide.

Close the throttle again down on to the sticks.
Now open the throttle slowly and watch the sticks. They should drop down under gravity when each slide opens and you can easily see if they are opening together. Adjust the slides as required.

Check your crank seals. Is it blowing heaps of smoke out the right pipe? pull the dipstick and smell it if you can smell petrol your crank seal is gone and is sucking in the gearbox oil and burning it and petrol is getting into the gearbox also.
To be honest if you bought this bike used out of Japan you don't know how long its been sitting around and most likely you will need to get the spanners out. These motors are easy to work on with spares cheap and readily available.

Check your crank seals.

Can you get crank seals in AUS?

Yamaha will have them for sure or just check out this site and you will have everything you need delivered in less than a week. You wont pay the VAT and that usually covers the postage. http://www.yambits.co.uk/

DO NOT BUY YAMBITS CRANK SEALS!!!!

Pete, sloooow down mate... read more forums over xmas and then start work. Yambits crank seals for the YPVS are junk, theyve caused more blow ups than any other part, including DPOs. Only buy OEM seals, and buy them online from the USA not here unless you are friendly with a dealer, and even then I think then online will be cheaper. Bear in mind that to fit the seals you need to spit the cases... you will need a full seal kit and can make decisions about a 350 or larger conversion and other stuff at this time and also fit new bearings etc.

Interesting John I never heard that before. I have fitted Yambits crank seals in nearly all my bikes, TZR, LC and air cooled 400, 250 and 350 but the ones in my RZ were not fitted by me so I don't know what they are.
