hey strokers thinking anout rear shock on 85 rz. anyone know of a cheap good conversion? dont really want to hack into the frame as the bike has had a full frame up rebuilt. done the front but the back lets her down badly. Also sounds like the r6 conversion has ill handling effects unless ride hieght returned to normal with longer dogbones etc. rdlc crazy has new shocks but not cheap. Surley there is something that goes in or can be shortened a bit to fit.

The RZ500 shock is a completely different layout... it sits horizontally below the engine, so would not work for what you are doing. Have a look at some of the threads on here, I think R6/R1 shocks fit without too much drama.

JonW will pop up with a link to his excellent website if we all keep quiet.... sshh!

Joking aside, the conversation on here usually drops in on the R6 shock which needs a penny sized cut out in the upper mount. Understand that you might not want to do that. I think there's a CBR unit that also fits but can't corroborate that. If there were it might not need a cut-out?
Or you could hard-tail it and kick out the forks. Very popular these days.

I always think people will tap 'R6 shock in RZ' into Google at some point, Its simple, works and is minimal work for a great shock. If you want a less good shock and no cutting, try the SV650, up to you...

After all these years we've only got this far:

R6 (needs cutting and a little higher)
CBR600 F4i (too high)
SV650 (lesser quality and less adjustable)

Or...

buy an uprated RZ one from:

Nitron (the best for most people)
Penske (the best for the rest of the people)
Hagon (good)
Ohlins (plenty have em but no long term tests that i know of so unrated as yet)
NB - all the above come in a few flavours with extra adjustability if wanted at more cost etc

Ebay has other good brands offering them like Hyperpro and YSS, but no one i know has one yet... get one and tell me how it is!

So there ya go.... Hopefully anyone else looking for this info will find this post and add their info here, one can hope....

I still say that the best $50 you will spend on your suspension is the R6, its a good unit for very little money and use the Economy Cycle bushings and you can have it fitted quickly.

The question after is... what uprated of the front end will you do....
