I'm surprised that the twoee's reign so supreme in these extreme enduros - 4T's are so good, tractable and good outright HP. I can only think it is light weight. There's not a great deal in it but at the extreme 10kg can be the 'straw that backs the camels back'.

Also, factor in the inherent 2T power-pulse - on every downstroke..
It allows both more positive power feed/less inertia, for throttle-control/traction..
& yet it still gives - greater resistance to stalling..
