My 1986 RZ250

Post by pkay »

Sorry had to tell someone.

After a little toil and swearing finally heard my RZ250 run for the first time since I bought it 9 months ago. Engine seems to be in good nick and after a bit of adjustment seemed to settle down to a good idle. Still needs the carbies set up properly but reved nicely if a bit smokey (will need that adjusted too eventually). Still have some clutch issues - I think I over adjusted it and went from locked to slip.....duh!!
Anway now comes the challenge of making it roadworthy so the list has started to grow.
First thing I noticed is its a Jap market bike as it has the annoying overspeed light on the speedo and jap warnings on the clutch master cylinder - first time I noticed that. Second I need to get the tach working but hope that has nothing more to do than putting a battery in the bike. I see that it wires into the servo/CDI circuit so should be OK I hope... The other thing I noticed is it doesn't have the rear grab rail nor is there any provision for mounting one. Other than that it's alive at last and well on the way to returning to the road. Yay.

Sounds real nice pk. I'm wondering if this model is the full fairing model? I can't get picture to open.
My Jap import had the red light too. While rebuilding gauges I just disconnected it.

It's a full airing "F2" type jobbie L.B.

PKay, I take it the frame has no mounts for a rail?
Not just "missing" holes in the plastic?
Ex UK, now in Adelaide. LC250/350. DT175. Shed full of sh1t in the vague form of dismantled rusty RD’s and RZ’s.

Had a look tonight, seems I am mistaken, she is a proper 1Xh so that would be an oz delivered 1986 rz250. Had a closer look at the side panels and they haven't been filled so its come that from somewhere that way. For fear of sounding like a true trainspotter it had a blue yamaha tank decal which I can't see on any other pictures they all seem to be white. It has been subject to work somewhere in its past as it is running pods and also has had someone playing with the wiring (uh oh.......). Raced maybe? You wouldn't want a grab rail at the track but then it has a horn and all the original road gear.

Anyway I am off to watch trains.........

Checked the rear this morning, there are definitely mount points for the grab bar on the rear frame rail. More mystery.......

You can't directly link an image that has been uploaded. That's why you're better off using photobucket etc.

The forum attachment upload is not the best option for pictures, and on most forums I actually disable it.

i had an 86 f2, it had the mounts for a grab rail which is different to the pre 85 models ;) the headlight on this model is a rectangle similar to the rz 500...the top fairings are in short supply as they fit the 500s as well....anarak mike

Square headlight model. It's all there and in Good nick too. This is where I start getting pickie about missing grommets on the rear view mirrors where they go through the fairing and stuff hence the anorak post about the grab rail.........have to bleed the brakes as well so will probably give them a clean out as well. Chores chores chores.

Interesting... so in 85 we had the rectangular headlight F1 (and maybe round light N1? Ive never seen one?) here in Aus, then in 86 the F2 came out also with a rectangular headlight, and the N2 was also here with a round light. So far all the same as the other markets... then in 87/88 for some reason we got F2s with round headlight fairings... yet no other market got them at all... why was that? ADR decided all new bikes had to have round lights?

Yep I have an 85... it maybe a bitza, but imho its a good one. Just trying to understand the crazy round light idea for 87/88 in Aua...

My info on the 85:
http://2smoked.com/Yamaha_1985_RZ250_YP ... RZ350.html

Some things tho... The dash isnt really off the TZR, its basically a 500 part, but yes leccy Rev counter from 85 on. The swingarm is not alloy (never was on an RZ in any market outside japan) it's heavy steel, and the wheels in 85 were the older 83/84 wheels, ie heavier than the 86-on units. Forks were same as the later 86-on units as you say. So yes, a bitsa but a good halfway house between the 83/84 and the new look for the F2 and the 500s.

I am thinking there werent many N1s, they would look just like 31ks without the cowl LOL.
(yes i do know that a 31k without a cowl is not the same as an N1 at the front end... Im being flippant...)
