LC Tuner/Repairer
LC Tuner/Repairer
Hi Guys
Anyone recommend a shop in Sydney (I'm in Southern Suburbs) that I can take my LC to get the carbs serviced and set up as it runs like a pig between 3 and 5000 rpm, been told I need to raise or lower the needle clip, it's also got a slight leak out of one of the carbs as well, I have an overhaul kit that I got from the LC Shop in the UK with some other bits I got, there are a few other jobs I need to get done on it also
I have been told that Sydney Motorcycle Wreckers & Workshop are very good, they were just 10 minutes from where I work in Alexandria, and I called past there a few of days ago to find a sign on the door saying they had relocated to Hornsby, don't mind travelling a bit if I have to
Any recommendations much appreciated
Thanks in advance
Steve

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
Steve, Most people these days do this stuff themselves, its not rocket science but can take a little time. The forums are very helpful so youre not on your own when youre doing it.
Interesting SMW moved to hornsby, I didnt know that.

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
Seems that way Jon doesn't it, lost faith in my local bike shop where I used to go with my first LC250 32 plus years ago, then after that with a couple of XR's I had a 350 then a 600, took my LC350 there when I first got it a few months ago and it took 5 weeks just to fit new tyres and a couple of other jobs, I told them to service it, and go right over it, when I got it back there's loose bolts and screws missing, brittle old fuel lines still on it with no wire clips etc etc, didn't even bother to grease the swingarm that has a grease nipple on each side, and they tell me everything good
Places these days only seem interested in changing your oil, putting new spark plugs in and then taking your money, that's why I was interested in SMW, they seemed to be the old school type of shop and had a good video on youtube about there services, a mate recommended them as he had a VMax a few years back and they were the only ones who could set the carbs up on it and get it running well for him at a reasonable price
They have been in Hornsby since May last year, think I will give them a call and have a chat on Monday, they may be open again by then

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
I have seen these guys discussing strokers on facebook before.
Might be worth a chat... they seem like decent guys, so probably won't tell you they can do it if they can't.

Particularly with a carb rebuild... it doesn't get much simpler.

Here is the reply:
Hello Mate,
Should not be an issue we take most jobs on here these older 2 strokes would not be subject to our fixed price scheme however and would all operate on an individual quote basis or hourly rate basis ($132.00).
If you have people interested send them our contact details and we are more than happy to look at each case and see if we would take it on.
Best Regards,
Justin.

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
I generally do all the work on my bikes myself so don't really know the going rate for bike shop service/repairs but $132/hour sounds extortionist.

It is, labour rate for workshop labour shouldn't be exceeding $80/ hour even specialist services like porting etc shouldn't exceed $110/ hour, no wonder people are avoiding motorcycle shops, they make it so easy to have a go yourself, it's not like these things are our only form of transport or we are using them to earn a living.

I agree with the cowardly absolutely, but don't let it upset you too much - because that is what ISIl is looking for.Greasemeup wrote:

ISIL want the hate to alienate young Muslims which makes their recruiting soooo much easier and justifies their unjustifiable violence. We need more of the I'll-ride-with-you type movement to take the momentum from them, and treat this as a cowardly crime.

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
$132 an hour would have you at least with a $300 invoice for carb tuning.
Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
For those of us in Sydney I reckon we didnt blanche at the $132/hr rate, everything is silly money here... If they are seriously good at what they do then 132 is fine as they may do in 1hr what someone else who charges $50 would take a day to do, but I fear with their 'we might take it on' approach that maybe they will only do it if they feel comfy, and maybe they wouldnt take on as much 2T work as 4T any day of the week etc. replace a cable? yep... tune a bike? er, no...
tuning 2T stuff is a dying art. there are guys out there, but i wouldnt be paying 132/hr unless I know the guy is a proven 2T guru and him and i understand whats to be done and to what level. all old bikes need more work than the usual component replacement that modern bikes seem to get, you really need an old school place with guys who love our bikes. I have mates in the trade who love them, but work on cars as bike guys wont pay a decent hourly wage or bring enough work in etc. swings n roundabouts...
NB. Ive never visited the shops mentioned above, or heard anything good or bad about them, so im just talking generically...

Re: LC Tuner/Repairer
I guess $132 an hour is OK for the fancy newer bikes where they might have to train their mechanics to be certified to work on them, but it's a lot of $$ for bikes as simple as ours.
I always find it hard to pay for a mechanic on a car or bike because I can do the majority of the work myself. Not every one has that option though, and if you don't then you have to be willing to pay.
