Many of those big roading 'projects' were 'make work' for unemployed ex-WW I 'diggers',
such as the Great Ocean Road in Vic, & the Nurburgring/Autobahnen in Germany...
These days of course, the only reason one of those 'road work' bastards picks up a shovel..
