RD350LC motor build.. for RGV / RD350LC

Hi all,

I am in AKL - NZ and its good to join all the 2 stroke fans down under. I have an LC in progress and a RG500, also some other 4 stroke bikes of a simular period.

I have read all the great posts and especially enjoyed the "what performance from standard 350LC" thread but it stopped before the bike was built.. looking forward to an up date on this project.

Anyway there was a heap of imformation on building a performance RD350LC motor and I am wanting some help planning my motor build.


Now the question is if you were to build a performance LC motor what would you do? I like the banshee idea but I dont think it will work with the LC.
So I guess i start with an after market ignition.. I have a Ignitec on my bucket racer and I like it so will use one of these... I want to put togeather a build plan for this motor and all help is appriciated.

Thats my build in the "what performance from a standard 350lc" thread, and its still very much alive.
Ive just been getting the right "Bits" together to finish the motor.
It started out as a tame idea and has turned into a 2 (maybe 3) bike overhaul.

Ive left my Ol Girl intact for now and have been stripping and preparing another frame, tank and motor to start from scratch, and also have a Hybrid underway.
Hopefully soon Ill have the rest of the motor bits from Steve at the 2strokeshop to finish my wish list and then the motor build will start.

In regard to your question about what to do to build a performance RD350LC motor, I have gone a bit of a mixed route and still may decide to create 2 seperate motors but so far I have the following

- New balanced crank from 2 stroke shop
- Athena Big Bores (421cc)
- Wossner forged pistons
- 2 stroke shop domes
- FCR 35mm carbs (or new 28mm PWKs ready for the second standard motor)
- BIllet trumpets
- V-Force 3 reeds and spacers and silicon intakes
- Zeeltronic (or ignitec is good too)
- Hinson Billet Clutch and Heavy SPrings
- Custom thermo bypass
- Heavy duty gearbox bearings
- New Banshee first gear (better suited ratio)
- Custom expansion chambers by Lozza
- JL Carbon Silencers

Im also getting new banshee cases but not 100% whether I will use them in the standard or Hybrid build, but if I only had one bike I wouldve stauck with Standard cases for mine so it all looked pretty normal but went like stink !!!

Anyway, you look like your on the right track with yours, it usually comes back to how much $$$$ you want to spend.

Pete thanks for the reply. i like the sound of what you have done. That is a impresive amount of parts. great fun building an engine with these bits in.

Just to confirm..

New balanced crank from 2 stroke shop.. have you gone with a standard crank or a new RZ crank that has been machined? Is the crank stanadrd length or a +4mm stroker crank?

Athena Big Bores (421cc)... this will fit the LC engine cases? not RZ cases? I like this option very much. I am assuming this is the +4mm crank. I have read that these barrels need some porting to get the most out of them. Are you planning to have them ported? Are you buying the kit or just the berrels?

There seems to be sooo much info and options and these is somthing bad said about each one.

The first thing... can this kit be used on an LC motor?

Once I know this then i can start planning... and saving. I want to build an LC with 70+ HP. What do you think you will be looking at with this setup?


Wossner forged pistons... are these custom made? Their site looks good. Why these?

Sorry to ask heaps of questions but it great being able to speak with someone who has done all the work... and I hope to an LC motor not RZ PV engine.

Cool, no probs.

So heres some of what and why I did / chose what I have.

Firstly, I am building a non PV 350LC motor, not an RZ PV motor, same that you are wanting to do. I was originally going to use the 350lc cases and machine them to accept the new cranks from twostroke shop which are based on the banshee / RZ crank although much better and will spin freely at higher revs.

I went for the 4mm Stroker crank with the best bearings etc, figured if your gonna spend $750 may as well spend $850 and get the best..but I stayed with 180 deg not 90 as I already had the Zeel with only one pickup and the 90 needs 2. You also need a 6mm spacer for the Stroker crank.

I sent my heads and barrels to Lozza (2Tinstitute) who was going to port etc who suggested I should look at the Athena kit cause by the time we did all the work, Athena had already done all that.

Steve from TSS also said the Athenas were great for the Non PV so then I decided to get the new banshee cases so I didnt have to do any machining, everything just bolts together although Lozza may still tickle them a bit to make sure it all flows right and are matched to the pipes hes built.

I bought the whole Athena kit and I put photos of it in one of my posts but can send em to you if you want. Its a great looking kit out of the box, but I didnt like the look of the pistons so Steve from TSS has sourced the Wossners for me that should be a perfect fit to the Athena and also will machine some new domes to TSS spec for me so again it all flows well and produces nice power.

So in short - Yes the Athena is a direct bolt on to the LC case.

If you want 70 + I suggest you talk to Lozza or Steve. You will need a good crank, carbs, chambers, port job or top end kit and then you want to upgrade the clutch to handle it all etc etc.

hey doc03 im confused..so ur using banshee cases??
they are different from lc cases...
banshee are the same as rz.. the athena kit..which i have owned built and ridden will only fit rz and banshee..unless there is another kit dedicated to the lc series im not aware of..how ever they all have the same frame mountings and can be bolted in to either bikes/quad
banshee cranks will also only fit rz cases..the lc cases need to be machined not by much, to fit the banshee cranks..please correct me if im wrong

How much are the banshee cases?
Will the LC gears fit in to the cases?

I am also confused regarding the LC / banshee cases and fitting the banshee cylinders.

I have found a manufacture of TZ cylinders in UK that I can use with LC cases but the porting is just to wild for the road.

I am thinking banshee cases as finding LC cases in NZ is like finding rock hours poo.

Dukeman the LC cylinders are capable of 70HP but they do need some work.A TZ 350 cylinder would fit on but beware if they have had ports hogged out. That makes them peaky in stock form they are not to bad but they are a race engine.
The Athena kit is as good as you will get for a road engine there is little work they need.
The real money will go into making the suspension and brakes cope with all that HP

Athena has the RZ stud pattern the inside rear stud is off set, will go straight onto RZ cases no problems

Had a chat with the Two Stroke ZShop.

And the answer is.... banshee and LC cases does not fit. If I want to use banshee cylinders then i need to use an RZ bottom end.

If I want to use the LC bottom end then I can purchase new TZ style cylinders from Rennstar in the UK.

I think the best option is to sell the LC engine as is and purchase Banshee cases and build up the the motor with as many new bits a possible. After all the bike is not a standard LC so I dont need to why about keeping it LC. But it will be a non PV engine using the Athena cylinders.

Right time to start pricing it all up...LOl. could take a while to assemble all the bits. So time to start on the rest of the bike.

Question...

Can I use the standard rev and speedo with Banshee cases? I would assume so but need to know.

probably have to drill out the bosses on the cases. Use an aftermarket ignition and they will drive the tacho. I dunno about the NZ models but pretty sure my RZ speedo was driven off the front wheel

Sorry Duke, been away and couldnt reply but looks like you foudn your answer.
Im using the Athenas with the Banshee / RZ Bottom end Yes.
I am yet to work out what exactly ill do for the Tacho but will prob be aftermarket ste up like motogadget etc.

banshee engine has a tacho drive hole, its just got a plug in it hasnt it? buy the gears from an early RZ and drop em in, thats what i did on my LC with Athena. Instant tacho.
