RZ500 Sparkplugs
RZ500 Sparkplugs
Could someone please tell me what make / model spark plugs I should be using in a RZV500? Whats standard? Any recommendations other than standard?
Also, what is the best (ie. cheapest) place to buy them in Sydney?
Cheers, Markus.

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
You'll struggle to find someone that stocks them in Sydney.
NGK BR9HS are standard.
They are a short series. MCAS ordered them in for me.

Thanks for that!

This is not going to help you Marcus but might help someone here in Melb.
Stafford Yamaha in Heidleberg stock these plugs and are the only shop I can find who do. They say that they will continue to stock them as long as I continue to buy them buy the box

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
Talked to MCAS (Auburn). They don't carry "R" (resistor) type plugs but they do have the ones with out the R, ie. B9HS. They said it would take over a month to get the BR9HS in. Sounded to me like they're overstocked on the non-resistor type ones...
I really dislike MCAS, they've pissed me of a number of times despite spending thousands of dollars with them.
Are the non-resistor ones ok to use?

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
The R's (resistor) were to stop interference with the YPVS system I believe.
I'm using non- R's in my 500 and I don't seem to have any issues, but I'm running the Zeeltronic PV controller which may have better noise supression.
Not sure.
You will get better spark from the non R's if they don't interfere with the YPVS.
You might also be able to go higher resistance in the caps and not bother with R's in the plugs, but not sure if its possible to source caps with higher resistance than standard.

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
It shouldn't be a problem running non resistor plugs because you can always fit a end cap with a resistor.
Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
Yes, but the 500 was supposed to be resistor plugs AND resistor caps.

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
Same as the RGV then
I'm told the Jap manufacturers liked to be a little over protective in this area and only put the resistor cap on just in case some one fitted non resistor plugs?
I guess the only way to really know is test the spark on the non resistor plugs then test the the resistor plugs to see if there is any significant voltage drop.

Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
Yeah... as I said, I'm running non resistor plugs with NGK resistor silcone caps and I don't seem to have any issues.

Found them at Supercheap Auto believe it or not. They are sold as marine plugs for Johnson outboards. Bit dearer than I would have liked, but oh well. (about $5 each)
When I checked the existing plugs on the bike they were actually nearly brand new B8HS...
Shame about the blown headgasket(s)... it started quite easily and ran pretty well.
I'm starting to think I might keep it... its a really nice bike.
Cheers, Markus.
Re: RZ500 Sparkplugs
Been looking at NGK and it looks like you might be able to use the BR9HIX Iridium plugs.

I will be looking at contacting them & asking them about availability sometime soon.

SuperCheap in Blacktown had BR9HIX plugs in the cabinet two weeks ago.
