Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
My '84 RZ250 is pretty loud, and I don't really want to become a cop-magnet!
The baffles appear intact, should I use packing in the zorsts? Were they packed as standard?
Cheers.

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
Good packing can actually help performance as well as quieten it down. I'd do it.

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
Pretty sure they didn't come out with packing.
Ive used fiber glass matting, but if not packed in tight,it can blow out over time.
Shopping with the Mrs other day,in a day dream pushing the trolley in the kitchen isle,I found these stainless steal scrubber disc's/pads.Nearly perfect in diameter,so bought a crap load at a dollar each & will use those in the end cans (stupid DG pipes.....)

Standard LC's were definitely wrapped/packed around the perforated sections.
I can't imagine any stroker can without packing, especially from factory.

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
The air cooled RDs were packed but the packing gets covered in oil and gloggs up the baffles. Everyone removes it and its suggested that it was to be removed after the run in period. I have never seen an LC or RZ with packing but then again never saw a new baffle or pipe so can say really. Personally I would not run it.
Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
I was told that if you have perforations in the end can without packing, it can actually harm the flow through the can because of the resonance created.
GP teams always ran packing in their cans by my understanding. Granted, they changed the packing on a regular basis, but even packing full of crap is going to be better than none at all.
If you're not going to run packing, you might as well just run a straight stinger and avoid all the issues.

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
I think its different in the pipes with cans that are usually rebuildable but in the pipes that are one piece like the air cooled bikes and the LCs and early RZs I think its a different story. I stand to be corrected on that however. The late model cans would need packing for sure.
Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
The LC's baffle is removable out the back and it had packing around it from the factory.

Can't find a bigger pic, but you can see it in the top corner here:

It was wrapped tightly around, then held in place with wire from memory.

gday. thats right, actually my left one fell out yesterday, bolt came undone, to loud without them for my liking
Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
As I said I stand corrected.

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
The op was asking about a 84 RZ,so guessing he's talking about cigar pipes which are basically the same as LC...
Either way abit of glass fiber or ss wool couldn't hurt?

Yeah, you can usually get the good stuff from most bike places as lots of dirt bikes use it.
I got some from MCAS last time I needed it.

Ballards has 'Silent Sport' packing really cheap

Re: Exhaust packing? -or not advice please
All good advice and tips fellers, Thanks. Mine are the earlier 'cigar' shaped zorsts, (no cans), -I'll probably try the packing, maybe run it first without so I can compare the diff'.
