Want to know more about Big cc RZ motors like Athena 421?

Post by JonW »

As we've seen a lot of questions about big bores recently on the forums around n about, I added a primer on my site, hopefully some may find it useful...

What I decided to do was research and write up the most obvious FAQs and then also add my thoughts in there too. It talks about the main ways to make bigger motors, cylinder/head kits and my advice on what I think its best to think about when doing this kind of work, and the costs. I also touch on triples, and boosted motors like turbo/superchargers, but really this is about cc's.

I will update it and pretty it up a bit next time I do an update but for now I just wanted to get the info up there as there has been a real upturn in those wanting to build one recently... probably coupled with the OEM 350cyls drying up... hmm...

Hell yes, parts are out there but not as plentiful and cheap as they were.
Great idea, distill what you've learned and put it up for others to reference.

I re-read your 421 LC page, liked your comment on your 421 Athena LC, that it seemed "in keeping" having no YPVS and retaining a distinct powerband.
Ex UK, now in Adelaide. LC250/350. DT175. Shed full of sh1t in the vague form of dismantled rusty RD’s and RZ’s.

Kits like the Athena have come down in price in USD, but I guess you mean with the AUD taking a hit the past 6months they have basically gone up?

Cool, glad you liked it, I love that bike... I was looking at getting the last few bits to complete it today... more expense but will be worth it :)
