Prepare to see prices rise on ebay... sigh...

Post by JonW »

Sadly they dont seem to think they make enough from fees on ebay and paypal, so now we see this:

'From 6 May 2014 selling fees (final value fees) will be charged on the total cost of a sale, i.e. the sale price + postage cost.'

That means if you sell something and the buyer pays you with paypal you lose basically 14% on the postage, no one will wear that... so I believe prices will rise to cover that.

I see a switch to Gumtree in the near future... Its already gaining popularity, but I reckon is about to explode!

Stops idiots selling something that's worth 100$ for 1$ with 99$ Freight, discourages excessive freight charges and encourages free freight. I see it as a good thing, but agree they probably could reduce final value percentage fee with all the extra loot they will rake in.

I see what youre saying GMU but for the rest of us guys selling off old spare bike/car parts it means a price rise... I just sold a racing car mirror to a guy in Canada. $127.50 it bid up to. He wanted it fast post, so it went Express for about $70. The mirror was as new and they cost over $200 from the UK plus post normally. So, from my sale ebay nets almost $30. Wish i could earn like that. The market sets the price for the item, I cant change that. I can overweight and hence overprice the post to cover the losses I guess, but it means the buyer just feeds ebays coffers...

Gumtree is free tho... or it is at the mo...

have you noticed the creeping closure of the evilbay/gumtree gap? theyre looking more integrated lately. Its a conspiracy I tells ya!
They'll get us in the end.

You can concentrate on the costs or you can concentrate on the profits.

I think it is Ebay just trying to maximize profits - dirty crass capitalist that they are!!!

I'm still selling shit that would either go to the grave with me or get binned - nice Pin Money and a clear environmental conscience  . Ebay probably makes as much money as I do (if you take in consideration my time, trevel to and from P.O. etc etc etc) lbut then I wouldn't be selling the stuff if I didn't have a world market with a brilliant search facility etc etc etc.

Its 'no skin off Ebay's nose' if volume and profits fall. They just give price relief and lower they prices until some sort of equilibrium is reached.

Which is pretty much what they have been doing. I get 40 free listings a month and they regularly give me an additional 100, which I make full use of. I'm encouraged to put up all sorts of shit. You just wouldn't believe that stuff that people collect, and pay for. I've been astonished.

My dear old Mum died about 4 years ago and I've gradually been going through all her stuff not wanting to trash it and knowing it is never going to be looked at again - so Ebay to the rescue.

My Mum kept all my Army Cadet memorabilia. I went to the povvo westies Fairfield Pats. A favourite 'sport' when in camp was to raid the posh eastern suburbs schools (at 2am), beat up on them and steal souvenirs - mainly hat badges etc etc. I've been ebaying them getting as much as $120 :$ .

Ditto with bike stuff. I don't sell bike stuff or anything else to making money but I don't like waste and it an interesting (barely) paying hobby. And I've got an insight to life I wouldn't have otherwise had  .

I think the real losers in this deal are people who are trying to run a Home Business using Ebay. The Big Boys would negotiate a favourable deal I'm sure.
