Differences between an RZ250 and RZ350

Post by pkay »

Hey Guys
As I launch into finding all the missing bits for my 1984 RZ250, besides capacitry (and as a result I presume carbies) are there any other major differences between the 350 and the 250. Eg CDI? I have found an 85 350 CDI in the USA and an 87 250 CDI in Australia - will either work on the 84 or do all the bits have to line up? Same for the powervalve box?
Greatly appreciated.
Cheers

CDI and PC controller should work fine on either.

But just get a programmable Zeeltronic controller instead - controllable PV and CDI :)

It's a can of worms... the 85 CDI may work with the 84 wiring, as the USA model in 85 was basically an 84... but who knows what differs in the OEM curve between the 250 and 350... I've been told they are different but I dont have any data to prove it.

The 83/4 CDIs are know to be problematical as they get dry joints... people clamp them to get the working again, its a nightmare... old parts... sigh.

Finally... There is a bunch of sites that list the compatibility between stators, looms and CDIs, you should easily find em in google.

So as Jeff said, do like the rest of us, just get a Zeel.

(PV controllers are the same between the 250 and 350 bikes, its a pretty 'dumb' system with minimal logic really)

Thanks for the tip - is there an Australian supplier for the Zeeltronic unit or do you source them from USA/UK?

I think Norbos site lists the mix and match CDI/ flywheel combos in his site http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ultimatelccrazy/
There is no way I would buy a second hand original CDI for an RZ from overseas

Also check the forums, some people buy them and never get round to fitting them, so place a WTB ad and you never know... Ive bought 2 unused ones over the years from people.

I converted mine, and if you want to make your 250 a 350 you will need, cylinders, pistons, powervalves, cylhead, oil pump, and cdi. Of course Carb rejetting.

No I plan to keep it as a 250. Interesting that the 350 and 250 both used Mikuni VM26SS carbs which are also the same as my RD250LC.
