R6 Rear shock for RZ?

Post by jools »

I'm told that an R6 shock will fit an RZ. (84 RZ250) Mine is stuffed.
Anyone know which year R6 shock will fit? Any modification necessary?
Cheers

99 to 01 R6 shock. Bush kit to make it fit from economy cycle.com & JonW's web site has a very well documented "how to".
Doing one now myself,easy as.

Great help, thanks boys. I'll do that.
Next on the list will be to beef up the soft front end. Already fitted a spacer in there but it probably needs slightly heavier springs and thicker oil.
I installed 'Progressive' springs in my old 350 and seem to remember it didn't make much diff.

Progressive springs helped my RD350R (RZ350) a lot.
Stick some Mike's XS Valves in them first for only $50.
Mike's XS Emulator valves.
Rip out the centre sleeve in the damper rod.
Weld up all the rebound holes and drill one only1.5mm at 31.5mm from underside of piston.
Drill the damper rod so you have six 8mm compression holes.
Use 10wt oil.

Good tips on front suspension mate, thanks. Progressives cost $185 though, have to think on about that one. (When I get onto it I'll prob be naggin' ya for more detail info!)

Anyone know how an R1 shock will go on the RZ? I've got one which looks in really good nick. I'm wondering about the spring rate though. Guy who sold it to me reckoned an R1 type has thinner spring wire gauge, (-seems odd, you'd think the R6 one would be lighter spring rate). The R1 shock spring is about 11mm dia wire. Don't want it to be over-sprung.

Diameter is not the only thing that matters.
Number of coils makes more difference.

If the R1 has less coils, then it may still be a stiffer spring.

I always found the R1 to be plusher than the R6 which was quite flighty over rough roads. There are a lot of factors in the suspension of course and adjustments/weight/position etc etc make a vast amount of difference.

So, the R1 shock doesn't fit. The reservoir fouls the swing arm, so I'll exchange it for an R6 one (hopefully).
Just on Mikes XS emulator valves... he doesn't mention RZ/RD application, I assume they WILL fit correctly?

I've got the Mike'sXS Emulator valves ready to install. (Price cheap, but postage cost me almost as much again!) -Anyway, if they work it'll be a good upgrade for under a hundred bucks.
I just need to clarify the conversion instructions. I assume that it's wrong to follow the 'Mikes XS' instructions? -Your instructions are different. (Eg if I rip out the damper rod centre sleeve the valve will be a very sloppy fit in the top of the damper rod -and it looks a bit of a prob to do this as you can't get a drift past the bottom thread) Maybe I can give you (mboddy) a call just to clarify? I'll PM ya. Once I get it sorted I'll post more detailed instructions for others.

Got an R6 shock ( FYI $150 from Vic M/C Wreckers) and I have done the frame cutout for the adjuster screw access (Ta Dremel).
Economy Cycle sent an incorrect bush adaptor set (bummer!), but they're going to send the correct bush SAP. They responded quickly, and we all know, *hit happens, so no worries.
My kid is going to run this thing around Broadford at the Easter meet, so I expect to take the RZ up there on the trailer and bring it back in a few boxes, LOL.
